Notes on colors

Some colors were mandated by the Universal Postal Union(UPU).

Green was the UPU color for the international printed matter.
Red was the UPU color for international post cards.
Blue was the UPU color for international first class letters.

The Canadian rates for these classes of mail are reflected by the color of the stamps at any particular time. For example, the first class rate started at 5 cents in 1912, was doubled to 10 cents in 1922, and was reduced to 8 cents in 1925.
